The Critical First Step to Engaging People in High Performance

The first critical step to engage others in high performance is to “Walk the Talk.”  There is a continuum between 2 types of people in the world.  On one side of the spectrum is the person who takes no responsibility for their life.  They continually blame others or circumstance, or make excuses.  They remain in a victim stance; therefore, they have no power or influence.

Then on the other side is the person who takes full responsibility.  Instead of expending energy on blame and excuses, they move full force into finding solutions.  They define where they do have control, and then they make a difference.  These people are very powerful and influential.

Steps to Walking the Talk to high performance

1.  Take responsibility for yourself.
How self-aware are you of your strengths and talents?  How authentic are you being to your strengths? Are you letting those talents come out so that you enjoy what you do?  High performance people know their strengths and live them out.  If you want others on your team to be in high performance, you first need to be at your best.

2.   Lead with positive and contagious leadership
According to the Institute of Heart Math, the heart acts as an emotional conductor and radiates how you are feeling to every cell in the body via the heart’s electromagnetic field.  This energy field can be detected up to 5 to 10 feet away.  The heart’s electromagnetic field is 5 times more powerful than the brain.  This is the power of emotional energy.

The most powerful way to create culture change is to have key leaders (influencers) who set the example.  Then key people on the team begin to follow and also set the example.  Soon, a wave of energy happens.

Check out this video for a great example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fW8amMCVAJQ

3.  When you are authentic, then people on the team begin to trust you.
Trust is THE critical foundation for any team.  Trust is built when people see others on the team as people, just like them, and not as a label or object.  For example, Dave is the accountant on a team.  Do others on the team refer to him as the “bean counter” or strictly by his title of CFO?  Or do they refer to him as Dave who grew up in a small town and enjoys running?

In summary, high performance starts with us and then spreads to others.  Assessments such as the Attribute index are a great way to start in gaining self-awareness of your talents.
Behavioral profiles are another tool that can help to build trust in teams.  For example, the DISC profile can help team members understand their unique styles and how each other communicates.  If you would like to learn more about assessments that can get you started to self awareness, please call me at (812) 881-6862, email or connect on the Imajine Unlimited Facebook page or Blog.
