The Secret to Having the Life You Want
“Would you tell me, please which way I ought to go from here?” she asked.
“That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,”
was the reply.
“I don’t much care where –” she said.
“Then, it doesn’t matter which way you go.”
– Quote from Alice in Wonderland
If you don’t create the vision and goals to direct your life, then someone else will direct your life for you. This is also the same for your team. If you don’t create the direction, vision, and goals for your team then someone else will. And, it probably will not be heading where you want it to go.
Do you have a clear direction for your team? Do you have a clear direction for yourself? What is your vision? What are your goals?
I have a diagram that I like sharing with people called the Contribution Cycle. In the top half of the circles of the diagram, you have items under your control and within your self-leadership. I find these to be vision and goal directed. The bottom of half of the circles are outcome oriented categories that flow out of how well we lead ourselves. So here is the flow of the diagram and steps to follow.

First, be clear on your vision and goals for your personal self. Define what physical and mental health look like to you. List your core values that connect to your ethics and belief systems. This provides a foundation.
When people are strong physically, mentally and with core beliefs, this impacts how they interact with other people and how they use their time. Setting your priority goals for your people skills development and time management become clear.
When we are healthy, interacting well with others and using our time well, our productivity and profit increase. What are the outcomes you want to achieve? Sometimes we get too caught up in numbers. When we stay focused on our purpose, the provision will follow. What are your indicators that show you are reaching your outcomes for productivity fueled by your purpose?
And the cycle goes full circle by impacting us personally and refueling us to live out our vision and purpose. We find that we are provided for financially, socially and in our family. What outcomes do you want to see in these areas of your life? For example, we can have a vision and values that translate into our family, but we can’t control other people. However, we can set goals for ourselves based on that vision that have ripple effect on those around us.
